Personal Details: William Alfred Bennett was born in Bristol, England and at the age of 23 he came to Australia. Before enlisting he worked as a railway worker.
Enlistment Details: On the 7th of January 1916 William enlisted in the A.I.F and was placed in the 32nd battalion.
Details about his role in War: He left Australia aboard the ship Anchises which departed from Adelaide on the 30th of March 1916. At Ferry Post in Egypt, he was attached to the 32nd Battalion on the 22nd of April then just under a month later was transferred to the 30th Battalion. He left Egypt aboard the "Hororata" on the 16th June, arriving in Marseilles a week later.
On the 20th of July later that year William was reported missing at the battle of Fromelles. Exactly one year later he was pronounced killed in action by the court of enquiry. He was 26 years old. William is commemorated at the V.C Corner Australian Memorial near Fromelles.
