Francis Varcoe

Francis Alban Varcoe

Private Francis Alban Varcoe was born at Raukkan on the 16th October 1895. He enlisted on the 23rd of August 1916 and was assigned to the 27th Battalion. He was 20 years and 10 months old. His complexion was dark, his hair black and his eyes were brown. He stood 5'7" tall and weighed 147 lbs.

He embarked from Adelaide aboard the HMAT "Afric" on the 7th Novemebr 1916, arriving in Plymouth on the 9th January, 1917. He was taken on strength by the 27th Battalion in France on the 9th April that year.

He was Killed in Action on the 5th May 1917 at the Second Battle of Bullecourt.

He has no known grave and is remembered on the wall of the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Brettoneux.
